The big list of small luxuries
September 7th 2009 03:39
There is some magic in wealth, which can thus make persons pay their court to it, when it does not even benefit themselves. How strange it is, that a fool or knave, with riches, should be treated with more respect by the world, than a good man, or a wise man in poverty!
Riches may enable us to confer favours, but to confer them with propriety and grace requires a something that riches cannot give.
If all the rich people in the world divided up their money among themselves, there wouldn't be enough to go around.
The chief value of money lies in the fact that one lives in a world in which it is overestimated.
I have enough money to last me the rest of my life, unless I buy something.
There are big luxuries, appreciation of which demands an understanding of finance, and there are small luxuries, appreciation of which demands an understanding of life. No amount of money can enhance the smell of a rose or the view over an ocean at sunset.

I think I'll redo the list in alphabetical order. I'll add votes if we getting enough responses to make it worthwhile. In fact I'll do it now - I'll combine hot baths/showers and make it the leader with two votes!

Tobacco is definitely a little luxury, however, and if it's all right with you I'll include it under that label, embracing the wider pleasures of the weed. Personally, I once smoked 60 cigarettes a day; now I smoke one cigar about every 60 weeks. And I've always thought of pipe smoking as a luxury.
Prawns are my favourite single food item. The best prawns I ever had were in a four-table restaurant in what was little more than a mud hut in a village of mud huts in a remote part of Hong Kong's New Territories. To steam a prawn perfectly requires an instinct which is granted only by the gods.
I shall leave you to the 24-hour maccas, but they perfectly embrace the spirit of the list.
All alcohol is good really but a good rum is right up there.
Air-con is a great idea.
What the heck is a GHD hair straightener?
